What’s a Buddy Bench? The concept originated with Christian Bucks, a young student in Pennsylvania, as a way to help his fellow students make friends on the playground. Faced with a potential move to Germany, Christian and his mother noticed a special playground bench at one of the schools. They were told it’s a place for lonely or anxious children to sit if they need someone to reach out.
The move to Germany fell through, but Christian noticed that there were students at his own school who played alone at recess; he approached his teacher and his principal to request that they install a bench on the playground where kids could sit if they were open to making friends.
Once he got the approval, Christian began fundraising for a park bench made by Polly Products and sold through a distributor. After it was placed in his school, the concept went viral!
