What is America Recycles Day?

America Recycles Day (ARD) is a nationally recognized day celebrated annually on November 15th and dedicated to increasing recycling awareness. Keep America Beautiful is the managing entity of ARD and actively educates others on recycling best practices and how to be more mindful of consumption habits.

The goal of America Recycles Day is to promote the environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage everyone to take action to address recycling challenges while highlighting issues caused by a lack of recycling and overconsumption.   Keep America Beautiful promotes ARD in the hopes of inspiring others to recognize the importance of recycling and to urge people to pledge to reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle more items more often in their daily lives.

Specifically, the #BeRecycled pledge is a promise to live a more recycle-conscious lifestyle by:

  • Recycling as much as possible in all aspects of life, including work, school, home, and on the go
  • Educating others about the importance of and impacts made by recycling
  • Learning what materials are collected for recycling and how to recycle properly
  • Encouraging others to also take the #BeRecycled pledge
  • Buying more products made of recycled materials

Why Recycling Plastic is Important

Did you know that the U.S. is the top contributor to plastic waste? Plastic waste has been an issue for decades, but as the number of products made using plastic materials are increasing, it has now become a global crisis.

Plastic is clogging up landfills, polluting the oceans, and releasing toxins into the atmosphere and the ground. Microplastics are now even being found in the human body because they contaminate the foods and drinks we ingest.

In total, the U.S. produces about 42 million metric tons of plastic every year, which comes out to around 287 lbs per person. This results in the depletion of our fossil fuel reserves and increased energy consumption and emissions to make that new plastic.  It requires much less energy and no – zero – oil to recycle plastic into new products.

It is also estimated that around 1.13-2.24 million metric tons of plastic waste leaks into the environment each year.

Researchers have also found that about eight million metric tons of plastic end up in the oceans, and if something doesn’t change, they estimate the number to rise to 53 million tons by 2030.

Clearly, both virgin plastic production and plastic waste are problems. This is why recycling is so important and why Keep America Beautiful is trying to effect change with America Recycles Day.

By cutting down on single-use plastic consumption, buying products made of recycled plastic, and recycling more items more often in your daily life, you can help:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption
  • Save energy
  • Reduce waste in landfills so we don’t need more of them
  • Cut down on plastic pollution
  • Protect human health

How Polly Products is Making a Difference

At Polly Products, we have made it our mission—our Green Promise—to do our part to protect the planet. And we do this by making outdoor recreational & commercial furniture made of 100% recycled plastic material.

Specifically, we use recycled milk jugs made of HDPE plastic, which is the safest plastic available because it is non-toxic, widely accepted at recycling facilities, and can be recycled and reused repeatedly.

And we are not only dedicated to creating eco-friendly products, but we also adhere to a number of other green initiatives to keep our business practices ethical and sustainable as well. These include:

  • Using environmentally friendly supply chain and manufacturing processes
  • Encouraging our staff to recycle at work and at home
  • Providing a recycling center in-house for recyclables and hard-to-recycle materials
  • Using energy-efficient systems to reduce energy consumption
  • Using recycled paper for marketing materials
  • Packaging products with recycled or recyclable materials
  • And more!

Furthermore, we have also partnered with One Tree Planted to help reforest some of the most devastated areas of our country. If you’ll help and make a donation during checkout, we will match that donation. And every dollar donated helps plant one new tree.

Please take the #BERECYCLED pledge and tell your friends about America Recycles Day which is just around the corner on November 15th!
